Tall Stome Arch Culvert
B&O’s Old Main Line sub has always been noted for tight curves, grades & tunnels. The early 20th century realignment resulted in more tunnels and fills to minimize difficult curves and speed traffic. In the areas I’ve explored on the eastern side of the grade up to Mount Arey the railroad is a real work of art. All along the river valley old grade alighments consiting of fills, cuts, & bridge abutments abound. They tell an interesting story when especially whem compaired with the new alignment with longer and higher fills wider cuts resulting in shallower curves and newer stone culverts. This culvert was around 10 or 12 feet tall. /DL

Randy Curlin General That's pretty neat. SP had some neat smaller versions of their concrete tunnels with wing walls as their culverts. 5/9/2015 1:20:23 PM
