Taken July of 1899. Apparently 105, being a switcher working in the Portland yard was frequently photographed. This 0-4-4T Rhode Island locomotive (Builders#2807) was put in service on the Sebasticook & Moosehead Lake RR in 1892 as #2. It operated as #105 on the MEC from 1896 to 1900 when MEC renumbered it to MEC#3. Cyl15x20, 50 inch drivers. It was scrapped in January of 1920. This comes from the Harold Vollrath collection. This close up scene of #105 is displayed in the R&LHS’s RR History #52. C1899. Note on the photo sez the Engineer was Mr. Thompson. Apparently 105, being a switcher working in the Portland yard was frequently photographed. c1900 From the back of the print: "Maine Central Engine #9 at Yard 8, Commercial St. Portland, Me." This 0-4-0 was a MEC Class 4-12. Cyl:16x24 w/ 52 inch drivers. Built by the Portland Works in 12/1887 builders number 571. This series of locomotives were renumbered in 1900, however this locomotive was the only one in the series which remained #9 before and after. It was scrapped in 1910. /DL |

The print is dated 6/18/1914 at Portland, Me. MEC had very few 2-6-2s. I could find no reference to a 2-6-2 #4. There was a 2-6-2 #4 on the RF&RL which became RF&RL#52 in Sept of 1903 then it was aquired by MEC in 1907 and numbered 113. I don’t think this locomotive is that #113 unless it was never relettered to #113... /DL |
