Dates:1/1/1880 - 1/1/1980
Album Info:MEC's Kineo branch was laid down by the Somerset Railroad. It extended north from the MEC's Back Road at Oakland eventually reaching Kineo on Moosehead Lake. Track was laid to N.Anson by 1875 to Solon by 1889 and into Bingham in 1890. In the early 1900s track was put down from Austin Jct, a mile or so south, of Bingham to Rockwood across Moosehead Lake from Kineo. There was a junction with the CP at Somerset Jct. MEC took over management in 1911. All passenger service ended by late 1933. Track was taken up from Austin Jct to Kineo in late 1936. Freight service to Bingham continued into 1975. R&LHS#152 and The Old Somerset Railroad by Walter M Macoughall area good sources of the history of this railroad. /DL

Building Gulf Stream Trestle
Title:  Building Gulf Stream Trestle
Description:  Many references list this trestle for Bingham, however a glance at the Maine Atlas & Gazettier place the bridge in Moscow, Maine a few miles up the track from Austin Jct. A Google search on Gulf Stream Trestle will provide more info. The only note on the back of this old print is - Building Gulf Stream Trestle 1904-05 - /DL

A snowy day
Title:  A snowy day
Description:  C1910 but that is just a guess. From an old Postcard simply annotated as: Bingham Maine. No date or photographer info. The photo card is quite sharp. The locomotive is number 12. There is a train number over the head lamp but I can’t make it out. This must be a passenger or mixed as several passengers with baggage are track side waiting to board. /DL

Lakeside Station & Yard
Title:  Lakeside Station & Yard
Description:  Sidings, Station and the Kineo House c1910. The Kineo House is in the distance across Moosehead Lake. This was the terminus of the Kineo Branch. The area where these sidings are in this scene became automobile parking for the Kineo House in the 40s and 50s. Today it is public parking for a public boat landing in the inlet between this storage yard and the station yard to the right. The station area was vacant in 2008 and the crib work was in disrepair. Reminants of the station can still be found if you kick around in the weeds and gravel. In this scene two steam launches are waiting to take sports to the various destinations on the lake. The mountain on the left is Mt. Kineo a local land mark. Steam ship and train connections were carefully maintained back in the 20s. The turnaround time for an order to Sears in Boston was 2 days and 1 night if you got the order on the morning boat for Rockwood from any of the sporting camps on the lake. /DL

Bingham to the left
Title:  Bingham to the left
Description:  Bingham Branch at Austin Junction at MP P119.18. Kineo would have been up the ROW thru the trees. Oakland is 40 odd miles behind the camera. The railroad, as the Somerset Railway, reached this point in 1890. It was extended to Moosehead Lake in 1906 and became the Kineo Branch of the MEC in 1911. The last passenger run was made in September of 1933 at which time the track was taken up north of Bingham and the Junction became a Jct in name only. (Tip of the hat to the keeper of the Somerset RR page on Wikipedia.) /DL
