April 27th 1869: Notes with the photograph: "Portland and Oxford Central RR Engine F.O.J.Smith thru the bridge over the Nezinscot River in Buckfiend on 27 April 1869. The conductor, Ed S.Burroughs, the engineer, O.P. Tucker and Frenchman acting as fireman jumped into the river and were swepped over the dam, but were rescued unharmed. The engine was built by the Portland Co in 1852 as the 'Danville' for the Atlantic & St.Lawrence RR, became Grand Trunk RR #111, then to the Portland and Oxford Central RR, the Portland and Rumford Falls RR and finally to the Maine Central RR." /DL |

c1874 - The B&B was built to wide gauge (5 foot) in 1874. It was bought by the E&NA a few years later and regauged to 3 feet then leased to the MEC shortly after when it was moved yet again to standard gauge. This photo looks like the origional construction crew laying ballast. Can those planks in the foreground be ties?? I grew up in the large house on the skyline in this photograph. Today three tracks pass here although there is no traffic on them since the paper mill has closed. R&LHS RR History #152 says this locomotive was the "Dirigo' obtained from the Bangor Orono & Milford (BO&M) in 1870 and run on the B&B until 9/1879. It was scrapped in 1892. /DL |

Inching this thing along must require most of the crew energy to move the track components from the back of the shovel to the front and reset the stablizers. C1900 - In a nutshell.... In 1887 The Dominion Lime Co opened a 4 mile line between Lime Ridge & Doswell Jct., PQ. It was sold to the Hereford Ry in 1889. MEC leased the Hereford in May of 1890. This scene shows a gleeming MEC 126 apparently at the end of track in front of the station. The 225 in front of the head lamp is the train number. The Fall 1904 time table lists Train 225 as departing Quebec City at 7AM & passing through Doswell Jct at 8:35 AM. By this date Lime Ridge had apparently become a short branch on the longer run over the Quebec Central from Doswell Jct to Levis a station on the banks of the St. Lawrence across the river from Quebec City. #126 was an MEC Class H renumbered from 101 to 126 in 1900. From the Portland Works it was built in April of 1889 and scrapped May of 1916. Builders #587. /DL |

C1905? Waiting for the train at Hancock Maine. This stop is on the route of the famed Bar Harbor Express. There were 18 miles on the Bar Harbor Branch. Washington Jct just west of here was at MP BH18. The Ferry Terminal at Mt. Desert Ferry was at MP BH7.5. Then last 7.5 miles on the line were handled by the MEC Ferry Service to the dock at Bar Harbor. This little station was near BH15. Back in The Day a lot of private varnish passed by this station. Once the passengers were deposited at the Ferry the private cars were taken back to Washington Jct where there was plenty of siding space for storage. /DL |

C1910. From the golden age of the Post Card here is a scene of the MEC station in Mechanic Falls. I belive this perspective is from the western side of the tracks. The crossing gate may be for Oak Street. To the right is the interchange with the Grand Trunk, now SL&A. The last time I was in M.C. (c2013) the station was still standing and was a small business. The railroad ROW was a town street. This building was made of grante blocks very well fashioned. /DL |

Laura had to make two trips between Bar Harbor and Hancock Point because MEC didnt check her trunk through to the Island. But she loved the both trips anyway...! Somewhere on the MEC, date, place, and photographer unknown. Further research determined that this was a gasoline powered car. Note the piston ahead of the rear axle with the direct link to the rear wheel !!. The operator had to push the car to start it and hopefully jump on before it ran away. Speed control was done by turning one or both of the cylinders off. If the operator failed to get onto in time the car could and did take off on its own. In one instance a car went for 70 miles before it ran out of gas... /DL |
